Victorville, Calif., Institutes Crime Free Seminar Requirement
The city of Victorville, Calif., passed an ordinance in September requiring all rental owners in the city to attend an eight-hour Crime Free Multi Housing Seminar in order to be able to renew or obtain a rental business license in the city. The seminar must be repeated every three years and applies to all single-family home rental owners as well as apartment communities. In addition to completing the seminar the owner must also include a crime free addendum with the lease or rental agreement. If the property owner chooses to use a crime free addendum other than the one provided by the city's crime free housing coordinator it must be approved by the city attorney. If the resident or the resident's guest commits any crime on the property the owner is required to evict the resident. If the resident is not evicted, the city will declare the property a nuisance and will suspend or revoke the owner's city business license.

The San Bernardino County Sheriffs department currently hosts the Crime Free Multi Housing Seminars for any rental owner wishing to attend at no charge. AAGIE is currently working with the city attorney to get the CAA Drug Free Housing Addendum approved for use.

Also in San Bernardino County, the city of San Bernardino had been discussing the idea of instituting a mandatory, fee-based crime free multihousing program. After discussions with AAGIE staff the city decided not to pursue the idea. (Apt. Assn. Gtr. Inland Empire – Rachel Arnold)
